Congratulations to all the students who graded today, again the instructors and grading panel have been impressed with your focus and concentration. The grading panel consisted of Sensei Paul, Sensei Tony and Shodan Matthew.
Unfortunately our resident photographer managed to bring her camera but not the battery which was still at home on charge! Thankfully Sensei Tony keeps a pocket camera in his bag, so apologies if the photos are not up to the usual standard, the photographer was struggling somewhat on this occassion.
As usual, students, families & Sensei's gathered upstairs for some refreshments and a chance to chat. More photos can be found on our Facebook page (link on home page)

BLUE BELT
Grading from green to blue:
- Tony
We only had one student grading to blue today, so the spotlight really was on Tony. He did very well spending a lot of time on the mats by himself. His kumite was obviously a lot more fun for the other students and families to watch than for himself, ending with Sensei Paul & Sensei Dave pinning him to the floor, really zapping his energy. Well done Tony, our first blue belt!

The grading panel of Reikan founders Sensei Tony & Sensei Paul along with Sensei Jack welcomed Sensei Dave who has taken up a more prominent position within the club as an assistant instructor and board member.
All the Sensei's would like to impress on the students (and their families) how well they did and that the standard was very high this time with everyone gaining a merit or distinction.
As usual we went upstairs for some refreshments and time to congratulate and reflect on the grading.

14th JULY 2011
On Thursday 14th July, we held a small grading during class time for two students. We have only ever done this once before but the two candidates deserved to grade and not wait until the next one. The two girls grading were:
- Paige
- Nadia
9th July 2011
Today was the largest grading Reikan has held and took several hours to complete which involved a lot of waiting around for students in between their time in front of the panel.

The grading panel of Reikan founders Sensei Tony & Sensei Paul along with Sensei Jack would like to congratulate ALL the students who took part in Saturday's grading. It was a large and rather long event with everyone having to be patient whilst all the various grades demonstrated they knew the syllabus to move on. A special mention to Freya who is a student of IKC, who came with just her parents and brother to her very first grading at a club where she knew no-one other than Sensei Tony and Paul. That must have taken a lot of courage and you did IKC proud.

9th April 2011
Today we had 5 students grading from white to red:
- Anne Mette
- James
- Jemima
- Chelsey
- Kacey
With just one student grading to yellow:
- Emma
As usual with Reikan gradings, students, families and instructors gathered in the viewing gallery for a well deserved cup of tea/coffee/juice and a cake or biscuit. This gives everyone the chance to get to know each other a bit better and to congratulate themselves. We hope everyone went home happy.

6th March 2011
The grading started with a warm up for all students and then it was time for our 3 students grading from white to red:
- Emma
- Ashton
- Emma
We also had three students who looking to move upto yellow belt:
- Freddie
- Lindsey
- Tina
They had already joined in with the white belts doing all the basic stances, blocks, kicks & punches and then carried on with the extra stances, kicks, blocks, punches and combinations required for 7th Kyu. They should feel really pleased with themselves as all students passed with a merit or distinction.
The final part of the grading was four students hoping to pass their orange belt:
- Alice
- Zaina
- Mahboob
- Tony
They had already gone through all the red and yellow belt grading syllabus before moving onto their own. It was fortunate that we had two girls and two adults as this made doing the pair techniques and sparring much easier. The sparring was split with the girls up first, a very gentle start and whilst Sensei Paul had a little pep talk with them, Mahboob & Tony put each other through their paces with 1.5 minutes of good sparring. The girls came out and redid the sparring with a marked improvement second time round. Again all 4 students passed with merit or distinction. Well done to children and adults alike.

As usual, everyone was invited upstairs for some light refreshments and a chance to have chat and congratulate each other. Everyone today should be very pleased with themselves, you are continuing to improve and make the club very proud of you all.

29th January 2011
By 9am Saturday morning Joshua Walker-Reid & Stuart Reid started their 1st Kyu Grading. They went through all the syllabus covering basics & combinations together with all the kata's from Red Belt upwards finishing with Seinchin & Bassai Dai. The Panel, consisting of Sensei Paul, Sensei Tony, junior instructors Sean & Jack together with Sensei Svapnil from IKC our association then asked the candidates some questions.
The grading finished with 15 minutes of kumite. Stuart sparred with Sensei Paul & Svapnil and a big thank you to Mahboob for giving up his time to come & help out. Joshua sparred with Jack & Sean giving and receiving several blows to the nose! Stuart & Joshua now join Nicole as our three 1st Kyu's and the club is very proud of you all, it's been a long time coming.

18th December 2010
Bright and early Saturday morning (while the temperature was still -4 degrees!) students started arriving for their grading. Harry Wright, Mohammed Humza Sahil, Freddie Sanders & Lindsey Claridge lined up alongside two students from the adult class, Jan & Tina Williams. Well done to our new red belts who all passed with distinction.
We had four students grading to yellow belt while Matthew Hutchings might have been the only child student present, he passed with a distinction alongside Tony Stubbings. Congratulations also to Gemma Ooijman and Mahboob Hussain who both passed with a merit. Well done to everyone present. We then went upstairs as usual for some light refreshments (although not sure sausage rolls and donuts are technically classed as light refreshments) where everyone had a chance to chat and congratulate each other.

11th December 2010
Early Saturday morning (before the rest of his family were even out of bed) Sensei Tony picked up Sensei Paul and they travelled to Redbridge to join other students of our association IKC that were grading to Blackbelt or higher. Sensei Paul assisted Sensei Tony with his pair techniques and stayed throughout, taking photographs and for this he has our thanks. IKC has has a new 1st Dan and two new 2nd Dans (including Sensei Tony) they also have two new third Dans. Congratulations to everyone who passed and for everyone at IKC who helped with the grading. Sensei Tony celebrated with a Radox muscle soak bath followed by takeout Indian so he didn't have to move too far!!
26th September 2010
We had white, red & yellow belts grading today. Congratulations to Gemma Ooijman, Mahboob Hussain, Matthew Hutchings, Max Rootsey & Tony Stubbings who all passed their red belt grading with distinction. It was good to see two more parents rising through the ranks, Gemma & Mahboob. It was also the first time many of us had met Tony as he usually attends the adult only classes. Well done to Max Rootsey our youngest student who had to endure a fairly long grading today, we understand how hard it is for the younger ones to stay focused and concentrate.
Next up were The Perry Family - Lorraine, Mark & Zoe together with Daniel Barnett. They all did very well under pressure, things that seem so easy in class suddenly seem a lot harder at gradings! All our new yellow belts passed with Merits, well done guys and girls. Please click the thumbnail to view a larger photograph.
Finally Alf Khawaja was our only student grading to orange belt today. Although Alf did a lot of stances, kicks, blocks etc with the other students, he was on his own for a lot of the grading. This must add to the pressure as you feel under the spotlight (and under the microscope somewhat!) but Alf did extremely well. Our thanks to Stuart Reid who came down to help Alf with the pair techniques and for the sparring, it was much appreciated. As usual with our gradings, those who wanted to stay behind could enjoy a small brunch buffet with tea, coffee and squash for the younger students. It's a really nice time to sit and chat and get to know the other students and families.

8th May 2010
The first grading is always a nervous time for students, most do not know quite what to expect. Our candidates coped very well with the pressure and everyone passed their 8th Kyu grade with a distinction. Congratulations to our new red belts, Daniel Barnett and our first family to grade: Zoe, Lorraine & Mark Perry . They then sat patiently watching while the yellow belt candidates went through their grading. Well done, you should all be very pleased with yourselves!
Next up were the new yellow belt candidates who had all gone through the red belt syllabus before getting to their own 7th Kyu section. They performed their basics and combinations and were asked to demonstrate certain moves in detail as well as answering questions on the moves and how to do them properly. Congratulations to Mia Rootsey, Maryam Hussein, Henry & Edward Waterfield who were all awarded a pass. Elena Ooijman and Zaina Hussein were both awarded merits. Finally Alf Khawaja was awarded a distinction for his efforts. Well done to you all and get ready for the next step of your progress.
After the grading we headed upstairs for some light refreshments and a time to sit, chat, eat and congratulate each other. It always finishes the gradings off perfectly.
27th February 2010
Congratulations to Alf Khawaja who became an 8th Kyu (red belt) today and was lucky enough to have Chief Instructor of IKC Sensei Lesley Darrington 5th Dan in attendance. Also grading was Alice Bray who passed her 7th Kyu (Yellow Belt).
Next Nicole Keates passed her 1st Kyu (brown/black belt) and Stuart Reid became a 2nd (brown/black stripe belt). The Reikan grading panel of Sensei Tony and Sensei Paul with Jack Perry (1st Dan) were joined by IKC Chief Instructor Sensei Lesley Darrington. Reikan would like to thank Sensei Lesley for her time and input and say well done to all the students who graded.
9th August 2009
Reikan Karate's first big grading took place on August 9th, 1pm at the Norman Booth Centre. All candidates executed their stances, basics & combinations well enough to earn themselves a distinction. Congratulations to Henry, Edward, Rebecca, Zaina, Maryam, Elena & Mia, everyone is very proud of you.
Afterwards the families stayed for some refreshments and to socialise, hoping to lay the basis for a strong bond between students, parents and instructors. Thank you to Sensei Tom of Hanko-Ryu Association for your help.
Alice was away on holiday for the club grading but we are pleased to announce that upon her return from Japan, she has now passed her grading and become an 8th Kyu Red Belt.
2nd August 2009
Congratulations to Stuart Reid on passing your 3rd Kyu Grading and gaining your brown belt on Sunday 2nd August 2009.
